Phoenix land rookie D Bellamy
The Sherbrook Phoenix made a move on Thursday with an eye to the future.
The team acquired 16 year-old rookie defenceman Jaxon Bellamy from the Moncton Wildcats in exchange for a 2018 first-round pick (belonging to Blainville-Boisbriand) and a 2019 second-round pick (originally belonging to Moncton).
A native of Hampton, New Brunswick, Bellamy reportedly asked for a trade from the Wildcats due to a lack of playing time. The 16th pick in the 2017 QMJHL Draft had scored two goals and an assist in 24 games so far this season.
In Sherbrooke, Bellamy will have an opportunity to step in immediately and see regular minutes with a young group of defencemen. 19 year-old Thomas Gregoire is the elder statesman of the group as Winnipeg Jets prospect Luke Green still recovers from a shoulder injury he suffered during Jets training camp. Bellamy joins Alexandre Joncas as one of two 16 year-olds on the Phoenix backend.
