Mooseheads rebuild attack, add offensive defenceman

The Halifax Mooseheads had ten picks, including four in the first three rounds at the 2017 QMJHL Entry Draft on Saturday June 3, 2017 in Saint John, N.B.

With their fourth overall pick, Halifax selected Xavier Parent from College Esther-Blondin in Midget AAA. Parent recorded 55 points and 24 goals in 34 games last year. He was ranked fourth overall by the CSR.

The second first-round pick was a local product. They selected defenceman Justin Barron from the Halifax Macs of the NSMMHL with the 13th overall pick. Barron recorded six goals and 25 points in 38 games last year. He was originally ranked sixth overall by the CSR.

With their first pick in the third round, the Moose quiet possibly committed theft when they selected Alex Newhook from York-Simcoe Express Minor Midget AAA. Newhook notched 74 points and 43 goals in 33 games last year. He was originally ranked fifth overall by the CSR, but is a threat to play in the NCAA with Boston College. That’s why he was available for the Moose in the third round.

With their last pick of round three, the Halifax Mooseheads selected Cole Stewart from the Moncton Flyers of the NBPEIMMHL. He finished with 18 goals and 37 points in 35 games last year. He was ranked 33rd overall by the CSR.

In round seven, the Moose picked up Arlo Merritt. He had 11 points, including five goals in 33 games with Kimball Union Academy last year. He was ranked 13th overall by the CSR.

If Newhook and Merritt come to Halifax, the Moosehead are going to have a pretty good offensive nucleus with Benoit-Olivier Groulx, Arnaud Durandeau, Xavier Parent and Alex Newhook.
