Otters double Sea Dogs in Memorial Cup semifinals
WINDSOR, ONT. – Taylor Raddysh scored twice while Alex DeBrincat had three assists to help the Erie Otters down the Saint John Sea Dogs 6-3 in the semifinals of the MasterCard Memorial Cup on Friday.
With the win, the Otters advance to the Memorial Cup final, setting up an Ontario Hockey League match-up against the host Windsor Spitfires, a team that defeated the Otters 4-2 in round robin action on Wednesday.
Darren Raddysh got the Otters on the board at the halfway mark of the first period with his third goal of the tournament, but the Sea Dogs would tie the game shortly after with Joe Veleno netting his third goal of the event.
Erie regained the lead just past the halfway mark of the second period with Taylor Raddysh scoring, but again Saint John would answer with Julien Gauthier’s second of the tournament making the score 2-2.
The Otters took a 3-2 lead at 2:38 of the third period with a goal by Dylan Strome, before German Poddubnyi added to the Erie lead just over a minute later scoring his first goal of the tournament to make the score 4-2.
Taylor Raddysh would later net his second goal of the game to make the score 5-2. Saint John cut the Erie lead to two at the 16:28 mark of the final frame with Thomas Chabot finding the back of the net, before Warren Foegele sealed the deal with the Otters scoring into an empty net with less then a minute to play in regulation time.
Troy Timpano made 20 saves in the win for Erie. Callum Booth stopped 31 of 36 shots in the loss for Saint John.
