Spitfires double Otters to advance to Memorial Cup final
WINDSOR, ONT. – The Windsor Spitfires have booked their ticket to the MasterCard Memorial Cup championship game on Sunday.
The host Spitfires defeated the Ontario Hockey League champion Erie Otters 4-2 on Wednesday to finish the round robin portion of the tournament with three wins and no losses, automatically advancing to the national event final this weekend.
With the loss, the Otters will play in the tournament semifinals against the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League champion Saint John Sea Dogs on Friday.
Windsor opened the scoring in the game with Jeremiah Addison scoring his third goal of the tournament at 5:50 of the first period. Addison made the score 2-0 just past the halfway mark of the opening frame with his second of the game.
The Spitfires added to their lead 43 seconds into the second period with Mikhail Sergachev’s point shot finding the back of the net, making the score 3-0.
Erie cut the Windsor lead to two at 8:10 of the third period thanks to a goal by Kyle Maksimovich, but the Spitfires would regain the three-goal lead shortly after with Addison completing the hat-trick, scoring his third goal of the game.
Taylor Raddysh made the score 4-2 late in the final stanza, but that’s as close as the Otters would come to tying the game.
