Ryerson adds QMJHL defenceman for January

The Ryerson Rams have added Quebec Remparts defenceman Aaron Dutra for the second half of the 2016-17 season.

Dutra joins a Ryerson Rams team which finds themselves on top of the OUA West division, and are currently ranked as the No. 3 program in the country.

“I was talking with [Ryerson’s] coaches in the summer, and they were interested in me coming at the start of the year,” said Dutra. “[Quebec] had a fourth overager come in, and we had a rotation, and I’ve been sitting out for the last couple of weeks. It’s a bad situation that put me into a good one.”

Dutra becomes the third ex-QMJHLer on Ryerson’s blueline with former Moncton Wildcat Austin Kosack and ex-Cape Breton Screaming Eagle Matt Nosella already there. For Dutra, he’ll round out Ryerson’s defensive core, but for now, he’ll prepare himself to make the transition into OUA hockey.

“My first job is just getting into classes everyday, just getting into a different routine,” said Dutra. “I know there’s more of a focus [in U Sports] on class than there is in junior, which is was really excites me.”

Although he leaves behind his junior career in Quebec for greener pastures, Dutra has fond memories of his time with the Remparts.

“It was really special to be part of a team that was hosting the Memorial Cup”, Dutra said of his first year in the QMJHL. “To play with guys like [Anthony] Duclair, Adam Erne, Zach Fucale – guys that you really learn from each day, that was definitely special.”

Dutra will be eligible to make his Ryerson debut on Jan. 7, 2017, when the Rams take on the UQTR Patriotes in Trois-Rivieres, not all that far from the team where Aaron Dutra suited up for 124 times in his QMJHL career.
