Canada cuts four


Team Canada has begun making cuts to help shape the roster for the 2017 World Junior Hockey Championship.

Team Canada cut forwards 19-year-old Nick Merkley of the Kelowna Rockets, 18-year-old Brett Howden of the Moose Jaw Warriors, 19-year-old Austin Wagner of the Regina Pats and 18-year-old defenceman Victor Mete of the London Knights.

Canada announced the cuts after winning twice over the U Sports All-Stars 5-3 and 3-0. Canada now stands at 15 forwards, 9 defencemen, and three goalies. It is expected that two defencemen will be cut Wednesday.

Canada will open pre-tournament play on Dec. 18 versus Finland, the defending World Junior Champions, at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Que.

Selection camp will continue in Blainville, Que., until Dec. 14.

The World Junior tournament begins for Canada on Boxing Day against Team Russia at 8 p.m. AST.
