CIBC Canada Russia Series: Team QMJHL blanks Team Russia to win series


CHICOUTIMI, QUE – Julien Gauthier had two goals and an assist and Callum Booth made 16 saves as Team QMJHL shutout Team Russia 4-0 at the Centre Georges-Vezina on Tuesday.

With the win, the Canadian Hockey League wins the series and leads in points at 10-5. The win also marked the first time Team QMJHL has shutout the Russians in the history of the event.

Nicolas Roy and Thomas Chabot also scored goals for Team QMJHL.

The game was scoreless going into the first intermission, despite Team QMJHL having the opportunity to take the lead as Pierre-Luc Dubois of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles had a penalty shot, however was stopped by Russian Vladislav Sukhachev.

Team QMJHL opened the scoring at the 15:52 mark of the second period with Dubois finding Gauthier in the slot, netting his first goal of the series. The QMJHL made the score 2-0 before the period was over Roy found the back of the net.

Chabot extended the lead for Team QMJHL with a goal just over five minutes into the third period. Gauthier added another goal for his second of the game at 18:43 to secure the 4-0 win.

Sukhachev stopped 21 of 25 shots for Team Russia.

Game 6 of the CIBC Canada Russia Series will take place on Thursday at 7 p.m. EST in Baie-Comeau, Que.
