Mooseheads’ Somppi wins gold medal at U18 Championships

Otto Somppi of the Halifax Mooseheads captured the gold medal at this year’s IIHF World Under-18 Hockey Championships in Grand Forks, N.D., on Sunday.

Somppi was a member of the winning Finland squad, who defeated Team Sweden 6-1 to capture the countries first medal at the tournament since 2012 when they won the silver medal.

In seven games at the tournament, the native of Helsinki had a goal and two points; the goal coming the gold medal game.

Jesse Puljujarvi led the charge for Finland in the finals, scoring three goals while Somppi, Eeli Tolvanen and Eetu Tuulola chipped in with single markers for the Finns.

Lias Andersson had the lone goal for Team Sweden.

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen picked up the win in goal, while Filip Gustavsson was tagged with the loss.

Finland will defend their championship title at the 2017 IIHF World Under-18 Hockey Championships in Slovakia, where the event will be hosted in Poprad and Spisska Nova Ves.
