QUISPAMSIS, N.B. – Friday afternoon at the qplex was all about the Lac St-Louis Lions, and more specifically Mathias Laferriere in a triumphant victory over the Saint John Vitos. Laferriere scored a hat-trick in the first 40 minutes of action leading the Lions to a perfect record in preliminary play at the 2016 TELUS Cup.
Mathias Laferriere scored five minutes into the game and added a powerplay goal at 18:01 to put the Lac St-Louis in front of the Saint John Vitos 2-0. Adam Capannelli continued his strong tournament with two assists while Azzaro Tinling and Kyle Havlena got an assist each in the first period. Shots in the frame were 10-4 for the Lions.
The second period was much the same as the first with two goals being scored by the Lions, one coming on a man advantage. Two minutes into the frame Laferriere completed the natural hattrick on the powerplay. Capannelli picked up his third assist of the night while Tinling got helper number two. It was only another two minutes before Kevin Pitts went five-hole on Michael Parkhill to give Lac St-Louis a four-goal cushion. After 40 minutes that was the score, 4-0 for the Lions. Quebec champions also had the advantage in shots 15-10.
A couple minutes after the midway point of the third period the Lions pushed the mark to 5-0. At 11:56 of the frame Tinling stripped the Vitos defenceman of the puck, walked in and roofed a backhand shot on Parkhill making Lac St-Louis’s mark even bigger. The excellent individual effort made for an unassisted marker. Nothing changed in the final eight minutes of the game and the Lions rolled past the host team 5-0. They also lead the shots 25-25 at the final horn.
With this game wrapping up the preliminary round, the semi-final picture was all set. First up on Saturday would be the second-place Lloydminster Bobcats taking on the third-place North York Rangers at noon Atlantic time. That meant that a rematch between the Lions and the Vitos was on deck for the 6pm semi-final matchup. Follow me on Twitter and watch TheQNews.net for recaps of all the action.
