One of the best and long remembered traditions in the city of Boston is always saved for the first two Mondays of February-The Beanpot. The 64th annual Beanpot Tournament gets underway tonight at the TD Garden with the two semifinal games, followed by a consolation and the championship game next Monday.

First a little background about the tournament. The schools that take part in the tournament never change, despite other local college hockey fans calling for some new teams, they stay the same four that it’s been since 1952-53. The four schools and the number of Beanpots won and the most recent are: Boston College Eagles (34 time finalist, 19 Titles, 2011), Boston University (50 time finalist, 30 Titles, 2015), Harvard University Crimson (25 time finalist, 10 Titles, 1993) and finally the Northeastern University Huskies (17 time finalist, 4 Titles, 1988).

Boston University Terriers- Terrier fans like to make the joke every year around this time and call the tournament “The BU-pot or The BU Invitational”. I guess after claiming 30 titles in a short 64 year span, you have the right to brag. BU claimed their first title back in the 6th edition of the tournament in 1958. Longest streak of success for the Terriers was a 6 year championship run from 1995-2000. Notable Alumni- Jack Eichel ’15-Buff, Chris Drury ’98- Col, Cgy, Buff, and NYR and Rick DiPietro ’00-NYI.

Boston College Eagles- The Eagles sit behind their rivals on Commonwealth Ave for second on the title list with 19 championships. The Eagles claimed their first Beanpot title back in 1954 defeating Harvard in the second year of the tournament. The boys from Chestnut Hill put together their best string of success from 2010-2014 winning the whole thing all five years. Notable Alumni- Johnny Gaudreau ’14- Cgy., Brian Boyle ’06- TB, Jimmy Hayes ’10- Bos.

Harvard University Crimson- The boys of the Ivy League sit in third for most titles with 10. The Crimson had their best run of success in the tournament from 1952-1956 making four championship appearances and winning it all twice. Notable Alumni- Dominic Moore ’03- TB, NYR, PITT, MTL, Steve Moore ’01- COL, Ted Donato ’91- BOS, NYI, OTT, LAK, STL.

Northeastern University Huskies- On the bottom of the Beanpot success food chain is the Huskies. Having only won four titles in the entire 64 years of existence it’s safe to say that Husky fans are the most loyal when it comes to standing by their team on the first two Mondays of February. The best bit of success the Huskies have had over the years was 1980-1988, NU made the championship tilt six times and took home the trophy four times. Since then it has been tough sledding including coming up short in the title game the last three years. Notable Alumni- Joe Vitale ’08- PITT, ARZ, Anthony Bietto ’12- NSH, Brad Thiessen ’09-PITT.
