Detroit Red Wings draft Evgeny Svechnikov 19th overall
With the 19th overall selection in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, the Detroit Red Wings drafted Evgeny Svechnikov of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.
Svechnikov, six-foot-two, hails from Neftegorsk, Russia and played his minor hockey with Motor Barnaul.
He played with AK Bars Kazan of the KHL briefly in 2013 before suffering an ankle injury.
Originally drafted 63rd overall by the Eagles in the 2013 CHL Entry Draft, Svechnikov made his QMJHL debut last season. As a rookie, the Russian import scored 78 points in 55 games.
Svechnikov has represented his native Russia on five different occasions. Most recently, he played against the QMJHL’s best Canadian players at the 2014 Subway Super Series.
The 2015 NHL Entry Draft continues tomorrow in Sunrise, Fla. with rounds 2-7 at the BBT&T Center.
