Screaming Eagles select Bowers and Hoyt with first round picks


The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles selected a pair of Maritime forwards in the first round of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Entry Draft on Saturday.

With the No. 4 overall pick, the Screaming Eagles selected Shane Bowers of the Halifax MacDonalds of the Nova Scotia Eastlink Major Midget Hockey League.

The Halifax, N.S., native recorded 23 goals and 29 assists in 34 regular season games with the MacDonalds. He also added 15 goals and 18 assists for 33 points in 17 playoff games.

The 15-year-old is also property of the Waterloo Black Hawks of the United States Hockey League, who drafted the forward with the 38th overall pick at this year’s USHL Features Draft.

Meanwhile, with the No. 6 overall pick, Cape Breton drafted right winger Peyton Hoyt of the Fredericton Canadiens of the New Brunswick/Prince Edward Island Major Midget Hockey League.

In 30 games with the Canadiens, the Lincoln, N.B., native recorded 29 goals and nine assists for 38 points.

Hoyt was ranked 11th overall by Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Central Scouting.
