Titan trades defencemen, picks ahead of Saturday’s draft
The Acadie-Bathurst Titan made official three trades during the pre-draft trading period which saw the Titan exchange three defencemen and draft picks with a trio of teams.
The first, and most anticipated deal saw defenceman Nicolas Latulippe head to Victoriaville in exchange for a fourth-round pick (64th overall) in the 2015 Draft originally belonging to Saint John. Latulippe spent parts of two seasons with the Titan after being acquired mid-way through the 2013-14 season from Gatineau where in 96 regular season games the six-foot-two blue-liner had eight assists and 86 penalty minutes.
The second trade involved an exchange of prospects and draft picks. In exchange for 18-year-old defenceman March-André Gauvreau and the Titan’s fourth-round pick (56th overall) in the 2015 Draft, the Titan picked up 17-year-old defenceman Xavier Vinetti and a seventh-round pick in 2016 from the Chicoutimi Saguenéens.
For Gauvreau, he played a total of 11 games for the Titan since being drafted in the sixth-round of the 2013 Draft where he registered one assist. The five-foot-10 defenceman spent last season primarily with the André-Laurendeau Boomerang of the RESQ where in 32 games he scored twice while adding 18 assists. The Boomerang would reach the finals of the RESQ playoffs. In Vinetti’s case, the six-foot-one Saguenéens prospect played nine games without registering a point for the big club while spending the majority of the season in Midget-AAA with the Collège Charles-Lemoyne Riverains where he had 11 assists in 34 games. The six-foot-one Vinetti was drafted in the third-round of the 2014 Draft.
The final deal announced saw the Titan send their 11th-round pick (182nd overall) in the 2015 QMJHL Draft to the Charlottetown Islanders in exchange for six-foot-two defenceman Duncan McKie. A fourth-round pick in the 2013 Draft by the Islanders, the 18-year-old has yet to play a game in the QMJHL, spending the past two seasons with the Valley Wildcats and the Miramichi Timberwolves of the Maritime Jr. A Hockey League. In 48 total games, McKie has four goals and six assists.
With the 2015 edition of the QMJHL Entry Draft scheduled to take place Saturday morning, the Titan could very well not be finished making moves before the conclusion of the event.
