Rockets hand Oceanic 7-3 loss

The Kelowna Rockets’ offence was on display Monday night in a 7-3 win over the Rimouski Oceanic in MasterCard Memorial Cup round-robin action.

Nick Merkley (2-1), Leon Draisaitl (2-1) and Gage Quinney (2-0) all scored pairs of goals for the Rockets who improve to 1-1 at the tournament. The Oceanic, winner’s of the QMJHL’s President Cup, fall to 0-2.

Kelowna was quick to attack, scoring just 52 seconds into the contest with Merkley’s second goal of the tournament. Draisaitl and Josh Morrissey drew assists.

Madison Bowey made it 2-0 Rockets at 6:16. Cole Linaker drew the lone assist.

Kelowna increased its lead to 3-0 at 14:27 with Quinney’s second goal of the tournament. Merkley and Bowey picked up assists.

Just 47 seconds later, the Oceanic got on the board with Christopher Clapperton’s first of the tournament. Alexis Loiseau and Jan Kostalek drew assists.

Exactly three minutes later, Michael Joly struck on the power play to close the gap to within one. Loiseau and Frédérik Gauthier drew assists.

In the second period, Quinney added his second of the game and third of the contest at the 1:52 mark with a power play marker. Tyson Baillie and Justin Kirkland drew assists.

Merkley added his second goal of the game at 10:42 to give Kelowna a 5-2 lead. Bowey and Rourke Chartier drew assists.

The Rockets took a 6-2 lead into the third period with Draisaitl’s second of the tournament at 13:18. Dillon Dube and Cole Martin picked up the helpers.

In the third period, Gauthier cut the lead to 6-3 with a power play goal at 13:36 with Joly picking up the lone assist.

Kelowna got the goal back as Draisaitl scored short-handed at 14:16 to give Kelowna the 7-3 lead. Chartier drew the lone assists.

Jackson Whistle made 28 saves in goal for the Rockets to pick up the win. Louis-Philipe Guindon was 17-for-22 and was awarded the loss for Rimouski. Desrosiers made 12 saves in relief.

Memorial Cup actions continues Tuesday when the Oshawa Generals (2-0-0) and the Rockets meet at 7:30 p.m. EST.
