Remparts open Memorial Cup with win over Kelowna


The host Quebec Remparts skated to a 4-3 victory over the Kelowna Rockets to open the 2015 MasterCard Memorial Cup Friday night at Colisée Pepsi.

The Remparts are 1-0, while the Rockets are 0-1.

Quebec opened the tournament scoring at 5:18 into the game from Nikolas Brouillard on a delayed penalty. Vladimir Tkachev drew the lone assist.

In the second period, Matt Murphy gave the Remparts a 2-0 lead at 13:22. Tkachev and Marc-Olivier Roy drew assists.

The Rockets got on the board with a short-handed tally from Nick Merkley at 17:56. Cole Linaker and Cole Martin drew assists.

In the third period, Ryan Graves made it a 3-1 lead for the Remparts at 2:08 with a short-handed tally. Anthony Duclair and Massimo Carozza drew assists.

Gage Quinney made it a one-goal game at 12:43 with a power play marker, Josh Morrissey and Tyson Baillier picked up assists.

Adam Erne scored into an empty net with 1:04 remaining to give the Remparts a 4-2 lead, but the Rockets wouldn’t go away as Leon Draisaitl made it a one-goal game once again at 19:24 with a power play goal. Baillie and Merkley drew assists.

Zachary Fucale made 26 saves in the win for Quebec. Jackson Whistle made 27 saves in the loss for Kelowna.

Memorial Cup action continues this evening when the Rimouski Oceanic battle the Oshawa Generals at 4:30 p.m. EST.
