QMJHL slaps Drakkar’s Pietroniro with 14-game suspension

Baie-Comeau Drakkar forward Chad Pietroniro has been handed a 14-game suspension today for abuse of officials by the QMJHL’s Directory of Player Safety Raymond Bolduc.

The suspension was handed out after an incident that occurred April 21 against the Val-d’Or Foreurs.

According to the QMJHL, at the end of the Drakkar/Foreurs game, two players, including Pietroniro, were discussing a video on the Centre Air Creebec video screen. A linesman broke the two players off and were accompanied to the dressing room. When both skates had left the ice surface, Pietroniro turned around and head-butted the linesman, helmet to helmet.

“A major penalty (code 4.92, category 3) was given to the Baie-Comeau player for physical abuse towards an official. The rule is clear in these circumstances, a minimum 20 game suspension should be granted.

“However the Director of Player Safety considered the frustration caused by the inappropriate video, the fact the official wasn’t injured and that the headbutt wasn’t at maximum force when making his decision.”

Pietroniro skated in 19 regular season games with the Drakkar picking up one assist and adding one more assists in 12 playoff games. The 18-year-old, St-Eustache, Que., native will have to serve his suspension next season, or in the LHJQ (Jr. A) which honours QMJHL suspensions if he does not play in the QMJHL next season.
