Islanders’ Chlapik to join Czech Republic at Under-18 World Championship


Charlottetown Islanders forward Filip Chlapik will be joining the Czech Republic at the Under-18 World Championship in Zug and Lucerne, Switzerland.

The 17-year-old heads for Switzerland today to join the Czech Republic which is already 0-1 in the tournament after an opening 6-1 loss to Finland yesterday.

Czech Republic plays its next game today at 10:45 a.m. against Latvia and Chlapik will not be in the lineup.

Chlapik just wrapped up his first QMJHL season with the Islanders, setting new franchise records for most goals (33) and points (75) in one season by a rookie. Chlapik also picked up one goal and nine points in as many playoff games.

The Islanders drafted Chlapik with the 11th overall pick in the 2014 CHL Import Draft.

The six-foot-one, 190-pound centreman is ranked No. 18 amongst North American skaters in Central Scouting’s final rankings for the upcoming 2015 NHL Entry Draft in Sunrise, Fla.
