Leafs, Kings Split Opening Games of NLMMHL Final


The St. John’s Maple Leafs edged the Western Kings 3-2 Sunday to tie the best-of-seven provincial major midget hockey final at one game apiece.

At The Glacier in Mount Pearl, Western doubled the Maple Leafs 6-3 Saturday to open the series.Kyle McGrath scored twice in the Leafs’ win Sunday. Liam Maher had the other goal. Brady Griffin-Hefford and Mike Lundrigan scored for the Kings.

Nick Childs and Michael Lundrigan replied for the Kings.

The Leafs outshot the Kings 57-52.

Brandon Sexton scored twice to pace Western Saturday. Mateo Short, Griffin-Hefford, Ryan Gillam and Lucas Reid each scored once. Short and Griffin-Hefford both added two assists. Andrew Barron, Tyler Hennessey and Dylan Guy had the goals for the Leafs, who outshot the Kings 43-32.

Luke House was in net for both games for Western, while Mackenzie Janes started Game 1 and Zach Gauvreau played Game 2 for St. John’s.

The next three games will be played at the Corner Brook Civic Centre next Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
