WORLD JRS: Russia eliminated U.S.A. with 3-2 win


Sergei Tolchinski’s power play goal just 1:27 into the third period proved as the winner as the Russians hung on for a 3-2 win over the Team U.S.A. in Quarter Final action at the IIHF World Junior Championship at Bell Centre.

Russia will move on to the Semi-Finals, while the U.S.A. has been eliminated from medal contention.

Russia jumped on the score sheet first with a power play goal from Moncton Wildcats forward Ivan Barbashev at the 2:31 mark. Vyacheslav Leshenko and Pavel Buchnevich drew assists.

The Russians made it 2-0 at 15:25 with a goal from Alexander Sharov. Alexander Dergachyov and Maxim Mamin drew assists. Shots were 10-9 in favour of Russia.

In the second period, Anthony DeAngelo put the Americans on the board with a power play goal at 12:43. Will Butcher and Jack Eichel drew assists. U.S.A. outshot Russia 12-10.

Tolchinski made it 3-1 Russia with a power play goal just 1:27 into the third period. Ziat Paigin and Nikolai Goldobin drew assists.

U.S.A. made it 3-2 with a goal from Zach Werenski at 8:56, but that is as close as the States would come despite outshooting Russia 20-5 in the third period.

Igor Shestyorkin made 39 saves in the win for Russia. Thatcher Demko made 22 saves in the loss for U.S.A.
