Bryukvin scores shootout winner as Russia edges WHL

Saskatoon, Sask – Vladimir Bryukvin’s goal in round 11 of the shootout lead Team Russia to a 3-2 victory over Team Western Hockey League at the SaskTel Centre on Monday.

Alexander Bryntsev and Konstantin Okulov each netted goals for Team Russia in regulation time.

Jake Virtanen and Cole Ully scored goals for Team Western Hockey League.

Team Russia opened the scoring 38 seconds into the first period as Alexander Bryntsev scored his first goal of the tournament, Ivan Fishchenko and Ivan Provorov picked up the assists.

The Western Hockey League tied the game at 19:05 of the opening frame as Jake Virtanen banged home his first goal of the tournament, Joe Hicketts and Jayce Hawryluk were given the helpers on the goal.

Cole Ully gave the Western Hockey League a 2-1 lead as he netted his first goal of the tournament at 17:35 of the third period, Travis Sanheim and Brayden Point recorded the assists.

The Russians tied the game at 18:43 of the final stanza as Konstantin Okulov found the back of the net for his first goal of the tournament, the goal was unassisted.

In the shootout, Vladimir Bryukvin scored the winner in round 11 giving Team Russia the victory.

Igor Shestyorkin made 34 saves, before being replaced by Denis Kostin prior to the shootout. Kostin picked up the win in goal. Eric Comrie stopped 13 of 15 shots in the loss for the Western Hockey League.

Game two of the Subway Super Series goes tomorrow, Tuesday, at 7 p.m. EST, in Brandon, Man.
