Islanders trade prospect Brushett to Shawinigan
The Charlottetown Islanders have traded highly-touted prospect Ryan Brushett to the Shawinigan Cataractes.
In return, the Islanders receive a seventh-round pick in 2015 with the condition if Brushett plays in the QMJHL in the next two seasons the Islanders will also receive a second-round draft pick.
Charlottetown drafted Brushett in the sixth round, 97th overall in 2014. Brushett did not report to training camp in August.
Brushett, 16, is currently playing with the Lac St-Louis Lions of the Quebec Midget Triple A Hockey League. He currently leads the league in scoring with 15 goals and 37 points in 21 games.
In a team press release, Islanders General Manager Grant Sonier said the team worked hard to convince Brushett to join the team but made it quite clear his intentions are to play NCAA.
“Shawinigan wanted the opportunity to speak to the player so we recovered our draft pick and established a scenario that would see us receive a second round pick if he reports.”
