World Under-17 Hockey Challenge: Day One Recap – Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013

The 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge officially got underway in Cape Breton on Sunday, with four games on the schedule.

Game one – Team Ontario Vs. Team Germany:

SYDNEY, N.S. – Mitchell Marner had a hat trick, while Dylan Strome netted a goal and two assists as Team Ontario stormed past Team Germany 8-1 in Group ‘B’ play at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge at Centre 200.

Jakob Chychrun, Brett McKenzie, Matthew Kreis and Blake Speers also scored single markers for Team Ontario.

Jakob Mayenschein had the lone goal for Team Germany in the game.

Troy Timpano made 15 saves, before being replaced by Ben Blacker, who stopped all five shots he faced in his 20:00 of relief, while Cody Brenner turned aside 34 of 42 shots in the loss for Team Germany.

Game Two: Team Russia Vs. Team United States:

PORT HAWKESBURY, N.S. – Brendan Warren and Michael Floodstrand had a goal and an assist each as Team United States got by Team Russia 5-1 in Group ‘B’ play at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre.

Noah Hanifin, Colin White and Auston Matthews also buried goals for Team United States.

Artur Tyanulin netted the only goal for Team Russia.

Michael Lackey made 17 saves in the win for Team United States, while Ilya Samsonov stopped 55 of 60 shots in the loss for Team Russia.

Game Three: Team Czech Republic Vs. Team Sweden:

NORTH SYDNEY, N.S. – John Dahlström had a three point game, which included scoring the game winner, as Team Sweden defeated Team Czech Republic 3-1 at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge at the Emera Centre.

Linus Ölund and Oliver Erixon also fired home goals for Team Sweden.

David Kase notched the lone goal for Team Czech Republic in the contest.

Felix Sandström played outstanding making 32 saves in the win for Team Sweden, while Daniel Vladar shouldered the loss turning aside 41 of 43 shots in the loss for Team Czech Republic.

Game Four: Team Quebec Vs. Team Pacific:

NORTH SYDNEY, N.S. – Maxime Fortier scored the game winner at 15:07 of the third period as Team Quebec edged Team Pacific 4-3 at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge at the Emera Centre.

Jérémy Roy, Nicolas Meloche and Jason Bell netted single markers for Team Quebec.

Nick Merkley, Glenn Gawdin and Brad Morrison fired home goals for Team Pacific.

Olivier Tremblay made 29 saves in the win for Team Quebec, while Nick McBride turned aside 18 of 22 shots in the loss for Team Pacific.

Action gets back underway at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge on Monday when Team Czech Republic takes on Team Quebec, Team United States battles Team Germany, Team Ontario faces Team Atlantic and Team Pacific faces off against Team West.
