Sea Dogs Select Juraj Siska in Euro Draft
The Saint John Sea Dogs selected Slovakian forward Juraj Siska , with the 9th overall selection in the CHL Euro Import Draft. Saint John also held the 69th overall pick, but opted to pass.
During last year’s draft , the Sea Dogs chose Jakub Izacky and defenseman Jurij Repe. Izacky was the team’s leading scorer last season (after Huberdeau’s departure) and was arguably one of the top players on the rebuilding roster.
The European forward was released by the Sea Dogs, as he would take and overage spot plus an European spot.
Siska , 17, is expected to replace Izacky , filling the final European spot on the team’s roster. He was drafted in the 2013 KHL Draft in the 3rd round (86th overall) by HC Slovan Bratislava and is listed as 6”2 and 194 lbs via Elite Prospects.
“Juraj Siska is a big forward who can play a power game,” explained Sea Dogs head coach and General Manager Mike Kelly. “We know he is recovering from an injury that could potentially delay his arrival, but we felt it would be worth the wait. Those big forwards can dominate as 18 and 19 year olds and we feel he will compliment the speed and skill of the players we currently have. We are thrilled to have Juraj as part of the Sea Dog family.”
Saint John has been fairly successful over the years with the Import draft. In 2009, they selected Tomas Jurco and Stanislav Galiev, who have both moved on to play professionally.
